Model (Training) Event - Kettle Lake, Cranbrook, BC  June 30 (2:00 - 6:00 pm): July 1 ( 8:30 am - 2:00 pm)

Just a short distance from the centre of Cranbrook, the Kettle Lake map will provide orienteers to the opportunity to experience a map, terrain and control placement similar to what they will find on the middle and long distance events. Directions to Model Parking and Shuttle.

Course Planner:  Kitty Jones, Event Directors: Alar & Eva Ruutopold

Thomass Event - Nordic Centre, Kimberley (start: 2:30 pm) - Sponsor: Kimberley City Bakery

The Thomass event is a head to head event that combines the strategy of a score orienteering event and the speed and quick thinking of the sprint.  (All participants compete against each other in one combined class which is handicapped based on age and experience). The event has two stages: Mass Start Thomass Box (depending on your handicap you need to collect between 4 and 12 control controls) followed by a Sprint where everyone must visit all controls.  All competitors are ranked into groups depending on skill, age and ability.  Those with a lower handicap must locate more controls than those with a higher handicap.  If handicapped properly, participants in each grouping should have an equal opportunity to win.  This event will also be an opportunity for local runners to compete again the orienteers.  Awards will be presented to the top three combined finishers plus the top finisher in each class.

• Middle - Cranbrook Community Forest - July 2nd
• Long - Cranbrook Community Forest - July 3rd

World Ranking Events

The NAOC Sprint, Middle and Long distance events will be IOF World Ranking Events for the M21E and W21E classes. If competing in these categories please be sure to include your IOF ranking ID number with your registration.  Those entering these classes, without an ID will be assigned one.

Maps & map printing

Maps will printed on a laser-jet printer. They will be in plastic bags. Legends will not be printed on the maps, but will be available on a separate sheets if required.  Maps for the model event will be included with the registration packages while all other maps will be picked up at the start line.

Control Descriptions

Control descriptions are printed on the map. Loose copies will also be available in the start chute. All courses use IOF symbolic descriptions, in addition courses for the youngsters (ages 12 and under) and open and Adventure Runner classes will have English language descriptions.

Electronic timing

We’ll be using Sport Ident electronic timing for all events. If you don’t have your own ePunch, pay the rental fee and borrow one at Registration. Be sure to return your rental ePunch at the end of your last event. Basic instruction on how to use the timing devices is available at the start of each race.

It is absolutely VITAL for safety reasons that you download your ePunch at the finish following every race – whether or not you complete your course. This is the only record we have of who is safely returned from the forest.

Course Closing & Maximum times

For safety and logistical reasons each event has a course closing time. After course closing we will begin to pick up controls and search for any participant who hasn't reported to the finish (so everyone must report back to the finish by course closing time, even if you have not completed your course). Also for safety reasons each person is allowed a maximum amount of time on each event.

Course Lengths

See the Class Selection Guide.pdf for class details including lengths and estimated winning times.
