North American Orienteering Championships & SAGE

July 1 - 7, 2010

The site for NAOC2010 is the East Kootenay region of British Columbia.  This area is noted for its beautiful mountain views, endless lakes, great skiing, river rafting, golf and amazing orienteering terrain.  Fast running through open forests, with a mix of small ponds, technical rock and contour features and varied elevation changes.  It offers it all.

NAOC2010 Hi-lites:

  1.   Sprint, Middle and Long World Ranking Events (WRE)

  2.   North American Regional Championship courses for elite orienteers

  3. Championship and open categories

Mappers Notes:

Middle distance terrain description - The middle distance area is dominated by several large hills with plenty of cliff and other rock detail. These hills have open south facing meadows, but offer denser woods on the back side with challenging orienteering and lower visibility. There are also small sections with more flat terrain and less detail with very fast running.

Long distance terrain description - The long distance area has some large hills, but these are gentler and broader than in the middle distance area. There are large sections of fast running with little detail, but also pockets of extreme rock detail and rugged north facing slopes with dense forest and low visibility, as well as a section of open grasslands. All aspects of orienteering will be tested on the long courses!

The best runners in M21E and W21E will start late in a Red Group. The selection to this group will be based on the athlete's World Ranking as of June 15, 2010. The race announcer will feature this group and there will be radio and spectator controls. The late start of the best elite runners will allow most other participants to finish in time to watch the conclusion of the elite competition.
