PROGRAM
Tuesday, July 6th - late afternoon
Sprint at Thompson Rivers University- Kamloops, BC
The sprint will take place on Tuesday July 6th in the late afternoon on the campus of Thompson Rivers University The campus is in the centre of the City of Kamloops and is easily reached from the major highways or the airport. There are direction signs at most major intersections. Inexpensive but limited accommodation is available at the University and there are many hotels and motels within easy reach.
The map has features that are common on urban maps. Running is fast and there is a mix of grass and paved surfaces. There are some areas of rough open grassland and steep slopes.
BBQ at University Gardens
The barbeque following the event will be held in the University Gardens.
Wednesday, July 7th - morning
Middle distance event at Edith Hill- Kamloops, BC
The Edith Hill map was first used in 1990 for the Asia Pacific Championships. The map area is 20 km from the TRU campus. It features an area of glacially sculpted large rounded hills with a mix of grassland and open forest. There are some areas of dense forest and slow running and there are many cliffs and boulders.
Getting There
The shortest route between the NAOC events and Barebones in Whistler is along the Trans Canada Highway through Kamloops. It’s 6 hours to Kamloops and another 3 hours to Whistler with many majestic places to visit along the way. Stop in Kamloops for more great Orienteering!
Leaving the NAOC events you will head north along the magnificent Rocky Mountain trench to Golden, following the Kootenay River and then the Columbia River, with the Rocky Mountains on one side and the Purcell Mountains on the other. Golden has great services where you can catch your breath before you head through the Selkirk Mountains to Revelstoke over spectacular Rogers Pass. Stop at the top of the pass and the Visitor Centre where a model displays the ranges of mountains and the engineering challenges they present. On your way down the western slopes visit Hemlock Grove or the Giant Cedars.
Once in Revelstoke, there’s an excellent railway museum where you can spend an hour or two or you can stretch your legs and admire the carved bears in the centre of town. If you have the time, take the scenic drive to the top of Mount Revelstoke National Park and hike through the gentle flower meadows that should be in full bloom. After Revelstoke, Sicamous beckons. It is Canada’s house boat capital, and on a hot day you can head to the beach for a cooling swim in either Shuswap or Mara Lakes. Another half hour drive and you are in Salmon Arm with great variety of services, a lakeshore boardwalk and jetty. Further along the road you arrive in Sorrento and the shores of Shuswap Lake again. From here a short side trip takes you to the North Shore of Shuswap Lake for a walk in the shade along the famous Adams River in Roderick Haig-Brown Provincial Park.
Kamloops is next. It is the biggest settlement on your route and has all the services that a smallish city can offer. We have two events planned and hope to see many of you taking part! On Tuesday July there’s a late afternoon sprint event on the campus of Thompson Rivers University with a barbeque to follow in the University Gardens. There are good facilities with showers on campus and there is an excellent swimming pool. Outdoor swimming in the Thompson River at the City’s Riverside Park is also a big attraction on a hot day. Make sure you book early for the barbeque as there are limited spaces for the meal. Next morning (Wednesday July ) we have planned a middle distance event in the cool hills above Kamloops.
After the Kamloops event you can continue your drive along the Thompson River to Cache Creek, and then through the Coast Mountains to Lillooet, Pemberton and Whistler. This is a truly spectacular drive, through sage brush and grassland canyons, across the great Fraser River, over yet another pass through towering peaks and into the heart of the Coast Mountains at Whistler. Don’t miss it!
